History of William Carey Christian School
The origin and nature of William Carey Christian School is linked to the Reformed Church in Holland, which was successful in establishing an alternate system of education to that which was provided by the state. This came about because of the determined efforts of Christian people, who believed that God placed the responsibility for the education of children firmly in the hands of parents.
The first Christian parent controlled school to open in New South Wales was Tyndale Christian School. Following on from its success, some of the families involved in the school decided to open a similar educational facility in the Liverpool area. This was the initial stage of developing what would one day become William Carey Christian School.
On February 9, 1984 the school opened with a total enrolment of four pupils. The school was initially located at the Reformed Church in Liverpool but moved to St Stephen’s Anglican Church in Cabramatta then the Uniting Church in Ashcroft before settling at the current site in Prestons in 1988. William Carey Christian School is an independent school and is not formally affiliated with the national body of Christian Parent Controlled Schools, although the structure of the school reflects this model.
The Liverpool/Campbelltown Christian School Ltd. is a company formed, owned and operated by an association of Christians. William Carey Christian School was established by the company to provide low cost Christian education in the local area. The association is inter-denominational and includes people from different church, social and vocational backgrounds.
To be involved in the operation of the company (and thus the school), individuals need to become a member of the company. As with all companies governed by a membership, there are criteria which must be met before membership is granted. There are also strict guidelines for behaviour and conduct of members.
There are four basic criteria for membership. The person applying for membership must be:
- a committed Christian
- active in a local assembly
- committed to the concept of Christian parent controlled education
- either in agreement with (for associate members) or able to subscribe to (for full members) the Educational Creed of the Association.
Interviews for both associate and full membership are carried out after a self-paced learning programme has been completed by the applicant. A mentor (who is a full member of the association) is appointed to assist with this process.
Members elect a board of directors, and the principal and staff are accountable to the board for the day to day running of the school.
The school gained stability by purchasing the land for the permanent site, which encouraged an increase in enrolments and laid the foundation for further growth, including the establishment of the High School in 1990. In 2009, government funding enabled William Carey to build a Prep School, which has brought the total number of students from Prep to Year Twelve to approximately 1,500.
